T Cooper was recently awarded residencies to The Millay
Colony and Ledig House International, has twice been a
fellow of The MacDowell Colony, and was just awarded a
NewNowNext Award in 2008. In
2004 T was a finalist for the Koret Young Writer on Jewish Themes
Award as well as writer-in-residence at The Bronx Academy of Letters.
T was born and raised in Los Angeles, attended Middlebury College in
Vermont, and then taught high school English in New Orleans before
settling in New York City in 1996. T earned an MFA from Columbia
University in 2001 and has had work published in a variety of magazines and newspapers,
including The New Yorker, The
New York Times, The Believer, and Out, among many
others. T was also publisher and editor of The Fish Tank 'zine,
which was awarded a Firecracker Alternative Book Award in 1999--even
though like, seven (7) people read it.
While working at Teen People magazine on inspiring stories about
The Backstreet Boys and 'NSync, T decided to start a boy band. So T became
T-Rok, and asked a few singing and dancing buddies to form a group. "The
Backdoor Boys" soon conquered the world, strangely acquiring more male
fans than teenaged girl ones. Weird.
T has enjoyed visiting Dollywood in
the Great Smoky Mountains on two separate occasions, likes planes, and
lives in the East Village of Manhattan with the 14-year-old canine Murray
Cooper.
